Friday 6 November Clwyd Railway Circle John Hobbs: A Black & White Circle of North Wales during 1963 - 66. A journey commencing in Chester and continuing to Holyhead before retracing our steps to Caernarvon, Afonwen, Morfa Mawddach, then a brief visit to Bala Junction before continuing through Dovey Junction to Shrewsbury & Wrexham.

Monday 9 November  Wrexham Railway Society, Building a Grange with Quentin McGuinness, Chairman of the 6880 Betton Grange Society describing the enormous work being undertaken to produce a new locomotive of the Great Western Grange class at Llangollen, looking at the build so far and their Steel, Steam & Stars fundraising events.

Monday 11 January Wrexham Railway Society, Woodhead - The Lost Railway by Stephen Gay describing the former Great Central main line from Manchester to Sheffield across the Pennines via the Woodhead tunnel closed in 1981 with  photographs along the route of the former railway.

Monday 18 January  RCTS: Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, Merseyside, Chester and North Wales Branch.    BRANCH A.G.M  followed by Back to The 60s with Geoff Coward. Geoff highlights photographs in various locations of the last few years of steam (1964-1968), including early diesels, mostly in the North West of England.

Friday 5 February Clwyd Railway Circle John Sloane: Chinese Steam in the 1980's This is drawn from the first part of a tour in the winter of 1986/87 and centres on railways in what at one time had been the Japanese occupied area known as Manchuria in the north east of China. This was still a busy steam operated railway with plenty of variety and steam locos were still being built at that time.

Monday 8 February Wrexham Railway Society, Steam in the East Midlands in the 1950's by Fred Kirk. Local Member and keen cyclist looks back at previously unseen pictures of those main lines accessible from his home city of Leicester ranging from the East Coast Main Line at Stoke to the Great Western's line to Birmingham Snow Hill, also the West Coast, Midland and Great Central lines.

Friday 12 February  Altrincham Electric Railway Preservation Society "Prince of Wales, Britain's most powerful steam locomotive. The Project to build a new P2 Locomotive" a digital presentation by Graham Nicholas.

Monday 15 February   RCTS: Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, Merseyside, Chester and North Wales Branch.  "American Wanderings - Heading East" by Gordon Davies. Gordon,  our RCTS National Chairman gives a digital presentation showing the American railroad scene in the eastern states depicting diesel locomotives working passenger and freight trains as well as electric locomotives, light rail and preserved steam in operation on preservation lines.

Friday 26 February Great Western Society NW Branch  Group Annual Meeting, afterwards possibly Members slides.


March 2016

Monday 14 March 2016 Wrexham Railway Society, Railways Of Wales in the 1980's - Geoff Morris describes a trip through Wales in a decade during which livery variations started to appear and steam re-appeared on a scheduled basis along the Cambrian & North Wales Coasts.

Monday 21 March   RCTS: Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, Merseyside, Chester and North Wales Branch.  "20 Years Of The Privatised Railway - What Does The Future Hold?" by Bob Casselden. Bob, a retired former B.R. manager looks at the changes to Britain's privatised railway over the last twenty years and reflects on what the future might bring.

Monday 11 April 2016 Wrexham Railway Society 'Days Gone' A Nostalgic Look Back at the 1960-90's by Larry Davies, looking at the enormous changes which have taken place on the railways in North Wales during the last four decades of the last century illustrated, mostly by Larry's own work.

Saturday 17 October was a busy day in the Conwy Valley, with two excursions arriving as well as the usual Class 150-worked local service. Since the Trawsfynydd line was severed there is now only room for one extra train to lay over at Blaenau Ffestiniog, so the other terminated at Betws-y-Coed and ran back to the loop at North Llanrwst to await the return. Above, 47 826 heads the empty stock movement from North Llanrwst to Betws-y-Coed to form the return excursion from Betws-y-Coed back to Scarborough. Picture by Trefor Thompson.


A Day in the life, 17 September



10:33 - Mold Junction. 57 315 passes with the first special, train 1Z28, 05:05 Didcot Parkway - Blaenau Ffestiniog.(Bob Greenhalgh).



11:03 - 175 102 heads through Abergele on the Down Fast line with the 07:21 Cardiff Central to Holyhead (Roly High).



11:11 - Abergele. On the rear of the train from Didcot, 47 786 Roy Castle OBE (Roly High)



11:17 - 57 315 leads train 1Z28 into Llandudno Junction (Jim Johnson).



11:38 -  57 601 leads the 1Z73, 07:08 Scarborough - Betws-y-Coed excursion out of Chester across the Roodee viaduct (Bob Greenhalgh). This train had been originally advertised as steam-hauled on the Scarborough - Preston section, but this did not materialise: the train was re-routed and diesel-hauled throughout, including a run over the Hazel Grove - Northenden line which is normally freight-only.



11:53 - Following the reversal at Llandudno Junction to access the Conwy valley branch, 47 786 leads the Didcot - Blaenau train over Tal-y-Cafn level crossing (Jim Johnson).



12:08 - Abergele.  158 826 passes through on the Down Fast with the 09:10 Birmingham International to Holyhead (Roly High).



12:13 - The Scarborough - Betws-y-Coed train passes Abergele, 47 828 on the rear (Roly High).



12:32 - The Tal-y-Cafn Crossing Keeper waves through a straggler before closing the gates for a service train...



... 150 264 forming 2D15 11:46 Blaenau-Llandudno (Jim Johnson).



11:54 to 12:31 - the train from Didcot waits at North Llanrwst as planned (Dave Sallery)



12:34 - Network Rail 37s 97 304 and 97 302 hurry through Llandudno Junction with the returning Holyhead - Crewe rail head treatment train, running 37 minutes early, while 47 826 waits at platform 1 with the 07:08 Scarborough - Betws-y-Coed charter (Chris Morrison).



13:20 - The driver of 1Z73 07:08 Scarborough - Betws-y-Coed places the single-line token in the cab of 47 826 at North Llanrwst, before proceeding to Betws (Jim Johnson).



13:23 - On the main line, the Rail Head Treatment Train led by 97 304 in water-blasting action at Beeches Farm bridge (Bob Greenhalgh)



13:32 - the train from Scarborough arrives at Betws-y-Coed where it terminates: the train later returned to North Llanrwst to lay over (Dave Sallery).



13:50 - 150 264 forming 2D16 13:08 Llandudno - Blaenau crosses the empty stock at North Llanrwst (Jim Johnson).



14:38: the train rests at North Llanrwst (Trefor Thompson).



15:31 - The 14.57 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Llandudno approaches Llanrwst (Trefor Thompson).



c. 15:40 - 47 826 heads the 15:34 North Llanrwst- Betws-y-Coed empty stock down the Valley with 57 601 on the rear, nearest the camera (Chris Morrison).



c.15:55 - 57 601 heads the return 15:48 Betws-y-Coed  - Scarborough across the Afon Conwy near Llanrwst.



16:30 at Dolwyddelan. The return train to Didcot heads north with 57 315 on the rear (Dave Sallery).



16:42 - Llandudno Junction. 47 826 awaits its 16:45 departure back to Scarborough (Peter Lloyd).



16:45 - the return train to Scarborough departs from Llandudno Junction, with unique and  easily-recognised 57 601 on the rear (Dave Sallery).



16:51 - 57 315 arrives at North Llanrwst to pick up a large complement of passengers from a coach tour with the 1615 Blaenau Ffestiniog - Didcot Parkway return Statesman Rail charter (Chris Morrison).
 


16:57 -  Having picked up the passengers the train drew forward to clear the points for 150 264 calling with the 16:20 Llandudno - Blaenau Ffestiniog on the other line. (Chris Morrison).



17:15 - 57 601 sits on the rear as the Scarborough train approaches Shotton Low Level (John Mathers).



17:23 - 47 786 departs Llandudno Junction on the Didcot-bound train (Peter Lloyd).  It had been timetabled to depart at 17.38 following Holyhead-Cardiff train 1V99 which leaves at 17.36,  but the local staff obtained permission from Network Rail for the train to leave early rather than running 'signal to signal' behind the service train. Arrival at Crewe was 22 minutes early.
