Rescue at Holyhead, 11 January 2005

A North Wales Coast Railway website picture supplement

To the January 2005 Notice Board

On 10 January, after various vicissitudes, the Riviera Trains loco-hauled train had been declared a failure and abandoned for the night at Holyhead. Here's a picture story of how the loco and stock were recovered at lunchtime the next day.

After the arrival of the Euston service, 47 839 and 47 805 arrived at Holyhead in some awful weather conditions. This picture shows 839 and 805 just after arrival the stranded set with 812 and the arrived London train  221 108 Sir Ernest Shackleton.

The two locos having run out and back into the sidings into a different siding  in order to prepare for the release of 839.

47 805,  having uncoupled sets back onto the stranded set and stands beside 839.

And the next move .... 839, having run out of the sidings, re-enters  the sidings to be shut down and parked out of the way.

Having completed the manoeuvres  47 805 awaits to leave with 812 0n the rear. In the short time these manoeuvres took, the weather had improved to provide some sun for this shot to be taken.

The train departs Holyhead and attacks the gradient.

A wide angle view ...

... and the scene looking east. A chance to compare the aesthetic effect of road and rail.
