Here's a selection of pictures of 'The Irish Mail' Ashford (Kent) - Holyhead charter of 9 April. 50 031 Hood and 50 049 Defiance brought the train into Crewe (Warren Desmond)

Arrival in Platform 12, 50 minutes late. The train was delayed by 30 minutes at Bromley South due to "points failure". Having missed its path it was 40 minutes late by Watford and was then diverted via the Northampton loop. Thanks to Rob Thomas, a passenger on the train,  for sending this delay information. Two crewe portraits by Steve Morris. Our best wishes to both of you!

Departure from Crewe - 60 minutes late (Steve Morris)

Contrary to reports we had received beforehand, the 50s did not stay on the rear of the train: instead 'Police' liveried 47 829 acted as train heating unit.

The two 50s shunted into the sidings  for their return working. (Steve Morris)

Duchess of Sutherland speeds through Abergele with the 1Z87 0452 Ashford-Holyhead at 12:16  (Larry Goddard). Eleswhere in the country attention was focused on the human Duchess of Cornwall.

Road works and speed calming police cameras on the adjacent A55 were not required as the traffic slowed down noticeably while the steam train was in view! (Larry Goddard)

6233 'makes a disgraceful mess' at a wet and windy Llandudno Junction. (Gwyn Williams)

Unfortunately, the weaher along the Coast was not kind. Alan Crawshaw writes from Bangor: 'My fingers were almost too cold to depress the shutter as 6233 arrived 40 minutes late at wet and cold Bangor. Some passengers alighted for the coach trip to Caernarfon while the rest were in for a few hours in Holyhead...

Platform end photographers pack away their gear as 47 829 disappears into Belmont tunnel. I'm sure the passengers will have appreciated the heating it provided. (Alan Crawshaw)

Passing Rhosneigr Golf Club on Anglesey (Mark Lloyd Davies)

The return train left Holyhead an hour late but some time was recovered at Llandudno Junction at the water-stop. The 1Z88 Holyhead-Tunbridge was making good speed at Abergele - 'Shot at 800ASA in poor light... thank goodness for digital!' writes Larry Goddard.
